There’s a moment that plays out in many of our lives, far too often. A request lands in front of us. We already know the answer we want to give. But instead of a simple, clear ‘No’, we find ourselves saying ‘Okay’, or ‘I’ll try’, or something non-committal that we hope will buy us some time.

Change is not always good. But it is always real. Denying it, resenting it, or waiting for everything to go back to “normal” are all traps that will keep you stuck. If you live and work in South Africa, you must become skilled at working with change, not just surviving it.

We like to think our memories are accurate records of what really happened. After all, we remember what we saw, how we felt, and what was said, or at least we believe we do. But here is the surprising reality: human memory is not a video camera. It is more like a storyteller that sometimes takes creative liberties.

Imagine living in a vast library with only one book and believing that book contains all the knowledge worth knowing. Sounds absurd, right? Yet that is exactly how we often navigate life. Despite the sheer complexity of the world, we routinely make judgments, form beliefs, and act on assumptions based on a sliver of what is available to know.
